THE MUSEUM OF THE SEA, CLOSER

The Consell Executiu has approved the project of reform and adaptation to museum use of the old building of sa Riba or External Health, property of the Ibiza Town Hall. This project plans to intervene inside the building with the aim of adapting it to its future use as a Museum of the Sea.

In the agreement to transfer the building to the Consell d'Eivissa, its original elements are maintained, while complying with the regulations for its new use and museum function with public visits. Although the building, which has three floors, is not very big, It has a very suitable location to be able to link it with an outdoor exhibition area, and especially with the part of the floating museum for exhibition of traditional wooden boats.

For the promotion of this project that has several parts and aspects, the Consell Insular d'Eivissa signed a collaboration protocol and a Mixed Commission was set up whose function is to monitor the entire project, and that it is made up of members of the different administrations involved in the project: the Ibiza Island Council, the Eivissa City Council, which gives up the building of the old External Health, the Balearic Government, which annually provides a grant for this project , and Port Authority that must allow the museum uses of the sea line that runs parallel to the wall of the old port, the floating museum, as well as the installation of some informational totems and museum elements from the section that goes from the monument to the corsairs to the Plaza de sa Riba.

In a parallel way, progress has been made with the museum project, both inside the building of the old External Health, as well as the elements planned to locate the walk that goes from the monument to the corsairs to the Plaza de sa Riba . This part of the project must be agreed with the Port Authority, to whom the museum project for the sa Riba building and the preliminary project for the floating museum have already been sent. And, the Insular Council, meanwhile, has commissioned the engineering project for the part of the floating museum where it is anticipated that there may be some traditional wooden boats: Lauder, Chalanas, world, balandros … It is expected that the works and the implementation of this project of the part of the floating museum can be assumed by the Port Authority as its part of participation in the project.

The museum exhibition inside the building of sa Riba, former Sanidad Exterior or Pósito de pescadores, provides for temporary monographic exhibitions that will be renewed annually. They will be based on texts and images but also on the exhibition of fishing utensils from the collection owned by the Ethnographic Museum of Eivissa (basic, networks, longlines, navigation and nautical tools, ribera and calafate carpenters tools. ..). Precisely this collection of museum pieces on themes related to the sea is being valued, and going through a preventive cleaning and conservation treatment, this with the financial support of the grant from 2021 of the Balearic Government.

This exhibition part will be complemented with an audiovisual documentary that can show and explain the different traditional and current fishing arts that are used on the island.. Explanatory drawings and diagrams of each fishing gear will also be important.. Other topics to be dealt with in different successive exhibitions are the extraction and export of salt, Posidonia, a natural asset, a World Heritage Site that we must preserve, traditional navigation, corsair activity …
