PUIG DE MISSA
Declared a site of scenic beauty by the Ministry of Culture in 1952, and a BIC in 1985 (Site of cultural and historical interest), and as a historical monument in 2002 The Puig de Missa is an important historical monument and a symbol of the heritage of Santa Eulària des Riu.It got its name from the fortified 16th century church, now a parish seat, on its highest point. The Puig de Missa is a hill rising to 52 metres above sea level, dominating a fertile plain crossed by the only river in the Balearics.
The basic structure of the current church, made up of the nave and the tower, is from the original building, possibly built by Fratín, the architect of the walls of Ibiza town (the island’s capital). Several additions were made to disguise its fortress-like nature, among them two adjoining chapels (number 3 and 4), constructed at the end of the 17th century, or the beginning of the 18th century, as well as the porches (number 5) from the same period, during which people from the countryside began moving to the town. The present main door (number 6) replaced the old fortified entrance and that of Ses Dones, or Cala Llonga (number 7). The vicarage, casa vicari, and then the priest’s residence, cas capellà, and the vestry (number 8). The interior of the church is sober. The main altar is baroque and comes from San Millán de Segovia, as do the altarpieces in chapels 3 and 4. Of particular interest is that of Christ tied to a column, a 17th century work.
