NON-COMMUNITY MEMBERS TO GET DISCOUNT ON SEA CROSSING

The Govern is proposing applying a 39% discount to non-community residents on the sea crossing between Ibiza and Formentera.  The councillors for social affairs, promotion and immigration, Fina Santiago and for mobility and territorial ordinance, Biel Vicenç, proposed the 39% discount to the Forum for Immigration for non-community members to travel between the two islands.  Some 600 people will benefit from this measure.

This proposal, presented before the Forum for Immigration has the objective of “setting an example”, as the Govern de les Illes Balears has constantly called for sea and air travel discounts to be applied equally to community members and non-community members alike.

According to Biel Vicenç, “it was necessary to attend the Forum for Immigration and present our case, because we’re talking about a group of citizens who work on the islands and who pay their taxes and contribute to Social Security here; and it’s discrimination that they can’t get the same discount and facility for transport as the rest of Spanish nationals or community residents”.

In the Forum’s session themes related to the up-coming “Pact for Immigration” were discussed, which according to the counsellor Fina Santiago is a commitment towards social integration which will be signed by unions, employers, organisations and the Public Administrations.  Santiago announced that the signing of this commitment is expected to take place in September or October and among other aspects, changes in the functioning of the Forum for Immigration are contemplated, with the underlying idea being to promote a greater representation of immigrant organisations and less institutional involvement.
