AFTER BOOK DAY… TIME TO READ!

BOOK DAY 2008
It was an intense, sunny, almost sunny day, full of books, of tales and also of comics!  But also dance, handicrafts, music, get-togethers and fresh roses…  Book day, although not a holiday (except in San Jorge), received uncountable visitors from all over the island to demonstrate that culture is also celebrated…

The protagonists of the day were, without a doubt, the latest literary novelties, especially the recent literature prizes, both local and national: the premios de narrativa Ciutat d’Eivissa, signed on the spot by their authors, and the latest ‘premios Planeta’ national prizes.

However, some great novels stood out as best sellers on the day as Lola, one of the stall holders told us, “Ruiz Zafón’s La sombre del viento & El juego del ángel and Ken Follet’s Pillars of the earth &World without end are the most sought after”.

But literature doesn’t only live through novels, as the number of nursery tales and comics on display attested.  In fact, just like little red riding hood gathering forest flowers, we caught the renown story teller Neus Montero red handed: “I’m looking for photography books, but also novels, children’s stories, a little bit of everything.”

We took advantage of such an illustrious personage to ask for Neus’s personal recommendation. “Chiquita”, a novel by Antonio Orlando Rodríguez, “it’s a beautiful story, I loved it”. This novel, winner of the ‘premio Alfaguara 2008’, tells the story of Espiridonia Cenda ‘Chiquita’, a dwarf born in 1869 in the Cuban province of Matanzas.  In spite of her meagre 65cm from top to toe, she reached glory in cities such as Paris and New York.

It was very interesting to watch the handicrafts stall where Catiana and Esther, leisure activity monitors at the Escuela de Tiempo Libre y Animación S’Espurna, as they taught people to make pretty paper roses. “Yes, it’s the first year that we’ve done this on book day”, Catiana told us “people get hooked on making roses”.

Finally we headed over to the stall run by the town hall where authors were signing their latest works, amongst them Vicente Valero, whose new collection of poems “Dias del Bosque” won the Premio Loewe 2008 and which he gladly signed for us.  At his side was Helena Alvarado, alias Nora Albert, winner of the ‘premio Baladre’ for her collection of poems ‘Tentacles de cel’.

And if that’s not enough for you, calm your literary passions, as on Wednesday 30th the VI Feria del Libro Antiguo y de Ocasión (VI fair of old and second hand books) starts in Vara de Rey.
