SANT JOAN NIGHT, THE EARTH BEGS FOR REBIRTH…

THE EARTH BEGS FOR REBIRTH…

In Ibiza, on midsummer’s night we’ll light the ‘foguerón’,
the brightest, most magical and purifying ever,
a “foc” capable of burning war itself,
our own wars, our own miseries…

We’ll burn the useless and the absurd,

the pains and rheumatisms of the soul,
the spiders’ webs, the dust,
the rancid creosote from our drawers,
the smugness and the arrogance,
all that doesn’t belong to the new times,
all that doesn’t make up new life,
we’ll burn it all…

FIRE HOMMAGE TO MIDSUMMER’S NIGHT

HOMMENATGE A LA NIT DE SANT JOAN

EXPOSITION « ES FOC HOMMENATGE A LA NIT DE SANT JOAN ».

(FIRE HOMMAGE TO MIDSUMMER’S NIGHT)

Asociación de Artistas Visuales de las Islas Baleares (AAVIB).

This year the association is travelling to a municipality outside the city with the exposition which will be held in the San Juan Cultural Centre (CCSJ)… and as the dates coincide with the Patron Saint’s Feast, not only is it included in the official programme, but will also have fire as a theme, main protagonist of Midsummer’s night.

The solstice fires have invoked the virtuous elements since time immemorial, the spirits of light and truth, to bring good luck for the new year. The tradition of leaping over the nine fires on midsummer’s night reminds us of these archaic costumes and beliefs. The Masonic year still ends and begins on midsummer’s night.

MUSIC & TRADITION IN THE ‘FIESTAS’ OF SANT JOAN DE LABRITJA

Can Raia Rock Band & Alò Bahía Dance
Will liven up the night of 23rd June.
The celebrations will last until the 1st July
Sant Joan de Labritja has strarted its ‘fiestas’.  And the diverse acts which figure in this year’s programme will last until the 1st July, date on which one of the most traditional events of the celebrations of the island’s northernmost locality is planned.

Sant Joan, faithful to its traditions with respect to its old folk, celebrates on this day, after a mass, the lunch in homage to the pensioners.  The exhibition of folk dancing by ‘sa Colla de Labritja’ is also not to be missed.

But the main events of the programme will be concentrated, as they should be, on the 23rd and 24th, and on this occasion the folkloric group invited to entertain the attendants is from the island of Gran Canaria.

This formation will perform on Saturday night, with a repeat on the big day of the ‘fiestas’, midsummer’s night, the night of Sant Joan.

On that same 23rd, the boys from Can Raia Rock Band will also play, one of the local bands most associated with the towns fiestas, and the Alò Bahía Dance Company will also perform.

On the 24th June, the fiestas will start with the celebration of Mass and the procession and the nocturnal party, after the fire works, will be to the the sound of the music of the Orquesta Paradís.
