THE WINDY SEASON HAS STARTED

To overcome the winter cold, the best course of action is to put your body through an intense work-out and if the day’s windy, you should go out and fly a kite.  You’ll need plenty of space to let out some line when needed and to run backwards and forwards following the course dictated by the wind.

It’s said that some kite flyers aren’t content with just flying their kites, but that they also made them fight and filled the skies with authentic battles.

Kite battles were a passion for those who took part and entertained crowds of avid spectators.  But in Ses Variades, the aim is leisure and not conflict and the objective, as in the Chinese folk tale, is to touch the clouds from the ground through a length of string that dances to the air of the winds.

Many cultures use kites in their celebrations of events.  They’ve been used for thousands of years and Chinese culture was the first to mention them in myths and legends.  The great explorer Marco Polo brought the kite to Europe in the thirteenth century and it became a popular children’s toy and later on it was used for scientific research when Benjamin Franklin used a kite to prove that there was electricity present in clouds during a thunder storm.  Kites also contributed to the study of meteorology measuring temperature and pressure at high altitudes.
