HOMMENATGE A LA NIT DE SANT JOAN ».

(FIRE HOMMAGE TO MIDSUMMER’S NIGHT)

This year the association is travelling to a municipality outside the city with the exposition which will be held in the San Juan Cultural Centre (CCSJ)… and as the dates coincide with the Patron Saint’s Feast, not only is it included in the official programme, but will also have fire as a theme, main protagonist of Midsummer’s night.

The solstice fires have invoked the virtuous elements since time immemorial, the spirits of light and truth, to bring good luck for the new year. The tradition of leaping over the nine fires on midsummer’s night reminds us of these archaic costumes and beliefs. The Masonic year still ends and begins on midsummer’s night.

The artists of the AAVIB of Ibiza and Formentera has reflected on the theme from multiple viewpoints. In this way we can find a whole range of interesting interpretations, which go from the tragedy of the Twin Towers in New York ("El Gran Fuego" – Julio Bauza) to a toy fire engine in a mini-installation (Holger E. Dunckel), and an African midsummer’s night (Eva Alcaide) to the night of fire on the island of Ibiza (Stafforini). "Llamas Alegres" (Peribáñes) and "Arde un fuego Gigante" (Carayol) stand out.

The whole collection of paintings by the local artists is decorated with Chinese balloons, brought by the visiting artist to our island, Vicky Chu, which in China are set to float in the air with best wishes for loved ones given by the flames of the lit slips of paper on which they are written.

HAPPY COINCIDENCE:

In parallel to the inauguration the ‘Banda Musical de Vila’ is also playing in the church’s square.
